    The Virginia Department of State Police is seeking qualified applicants for a Computer Systems Engineer position in the Information Technology Division located, in North Chesterfield, Virginia. This is an Exempt position; therefore, this position is excluded from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act due to the nature of duties and job responsibilities.

    DUTIES:

    • Monitors, analyzes and maintains Windows / VMware server systems. Interfaces with system users and vendor support personnel to resolve software problems. Develops and maintains recovery strategies and procedures. Ensures security of computing environments. Keeps abreast of new features and issues to aid systems staff in patch management. Contributes to identifying and fulfilling daily, weekly and monthly goals of the Engineering unit. Identify and incorporate where applicable latest techniques and trends in Windows / VMWARE platforms. Set up and manage DR hardware/ software environments.
    • Installs and tests operating system patches and upgrades using proper change management procedures. Provides documentation of operating system patches and upgrades and works with other system engineers to coordinate this support.
    • Provides support to out of scope Windows servers / applications: CCIS, DCIS, AirWatch, Evidence Management System, and Document Management System (Perceptive) and others as assigned. Works with the vendors to resolve problems. Communicates with the vendor about enhancements as needed.
    • Monitors and maintains the enterprise class disk storage array.
    • Performs other tasks as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Thorough understanding and working experience, including maintaining, installing, monitoring and performance tuning, of Enterprise class servers, and medium to large-scale Windows server 2008 or higher is required.
    • Experience working with enterprise VMware vSphere environments is required.
    • Knowledge of DNS, LDAP, and standard networking protocols are required.
    • Knowledge of and experience with enterprise application systems administration is required.
    • Knowledge and working experience with BigIP F5 LTM (Local Traffic Manager) is required.
    • Experience with creating and modifying PowerShell scripts to accomplish centralized tasks is required.
    • Experience building SQL Queries is highly desirable.
    • Experience with creating and modifying JavaScript scripts is highly desirable
    • Ability to translate user requests, provide technical support, communicate effectively, provide documentation and training, work independently on assigned projects, and develop effective working relationships with various levels of agency, state and vendor personnel is highly desirable.
    • Experience in the following hardware/software is highly desirable: Windows server 2008 or higher, VMware vSphere 6 or higher, basic concepts of networking and network devices, and managing Perceptive document management system is preferred.
    • Good knowledge and understanding of procedures for backing up and restoring enterprise class servers is preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience maintaining Group Policy is preferred.
    • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or higher is preferred.
    • Experience with Active Directory administration is preferred.
    • Ability to understand & satisfy VSP data security needs is preferred.
    • Experience with physical and logical concepts of Windows Server file structures is required.
    • Experience with troubleshooting Windows Server and application systems is required.
    • Thorough knowledge of and experience with performance monitoring, system testing, and software patch installation and testing are required.
    • Knowledge of and experience with data security and restart techniques are required.
    • Experience with standard networking protocols is required.
    • Experience with medium to large-scale Windows Server and/or enterprise VMWare environments are required.
    • Experience with OS upgrades, patch installation and testing is required.
    • Experience with providing technical support is required.
    • Experience with Windows Server scripting is required.
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

    AND PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG SCREENING REQUIRED

    Elements of the selection process for this position will also include the screening of applications; interviewing of qualified candidates; and salary negotiations. The pre-employment process can take approximately up to three (3) months to complete. The anticipated duration of this process is determined by the successful completion of the above items.

    Applicants must live in states east of the Mississippi River. Military applicants must live in or home of record must be in one of the states east of the Mississippi River.
