(ISC)2Foundation “Chapter Scholarship Challenge

The (ISC)2 Richmond Metro Chapter (ISC2RVA) held its first open house on April 20, 2016. Very soon after that, we were contacted by Carole Boniface with the Center for Cyber Safety and Education (The Center) to participate in the 2016 Chapter Scholarship Challenge.

The ISC2RVA chapter happily accepted the challenge and thanks to a generous contribution from Lumos Networks we raised the minimum $1,500 which allowed us the opportunity to award our very first scholarship. We have participated in the chapter challenge every year since, raising more than $12,000 and have awarded 10 scholarships to deserving high school students in our local community.

A majority of our donations have come through local companies like Lumos Networks who has donated $4,500 over three years and Northrop Grumman who donated $2,500 in 2018. The remaining contributions have come from our members.

We advertise our participation in the scholarship challenge through this website (www.isc2rva.org), on social media, through our newsletter and at each of our member meetings. Then in late 2018 we tried another approach to advertising. The chapter partnered with a local non-profit and donated one $1,000 scholarship to be awarded as a prize to the highest-ranking High School junior or senior in their Capture The Flag fundraiser. That allowed us to set up a booth at their event to promote the chapter which we believe will help increase the amount we raise for 2019.

The Center provides a dedicated donation page for us to point individual donors to and they work directly with the corporate donors to provide the necessary documentation for those corporation’s tax purposes. They offer a customizable portal for chapters to screen candidates; allowing the chapter to determine what questions get asked. They anonymize the candidates answers so each application is treated fairly. Then, once we have selected the recipients, they notify each candidate whether they were selected or not. Finally, they administer the scholarship distribution on our behalf directly to the recipient’s college (which could be a year or two later).

The Center for Cyber Safety and Education's "Chapter Scholarship Challenge" aligns perfectly with the ISC2RVA chapters mission to foster the next generation of cyber security professionals. As such, we expect to continue volunteering for the challenge every year that it remains available.  The Challenge fundraising period runs from January 1st until Sept 3oth, and the scholarship application period is from October 1 – December 31. Awards are presented to winning recipients after December.

The funds you raise will help high school students on their path to becoming cybersecurity professionals. Through your fundraising efforts you will also help your community understand the importance of a safer cyber world and of assisting the next generation of cyber professionals.

How can you help?  This year we have set a goal to raise $10,000.00 and would appreciate your help by supporting our chapter’s involvement in the Center for Cyber Safety and Education’s Chapter Scholarship Challenge to help our Chapter raise funds to award local high school students who are interested in pursuing studies in cybersecurity in college. Individual chapters are “challenged” to raise at least $1,500, of which $500 will be applied to the Center for Cyber Safety and Education Scholarship Program. The remaining funds will be made available for the (ISC)2RVA Richmond Metro Chapter to offer our own scholarship(s) to secondary or high school students in our local community. Our deadline for raising the funds is Dec 31, 2023. The minimum scholarship amount awarded to an individual student is US $250.
